Francesca Springer Comes Up Big For Her HS Team (Spalding)
Archbishop Spalding senior sweeper Kirsten Frank left the field at McDonogh on Friday more tired than usual. It turned out to be worthwhile exhaustion for the All-Metro standout.
After Frank and the Cavaliers' defense continually shut down the Eagles' persistent attack, the visitors got an offensive spark from an unlikely source.
Midfielder Francesca Springer scored with five minutes left to give No. 1 Spalding a 1-0 win over No. 2 McDonogh in a rematch of last year's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship game.
"I think the key was we just communicated really well the whole game," Frank said. "Even when things got crazy and they were pushing a lot of people up, we all knew who we were marking, we all knew what our job was and basically it came down to the communication."
The hard work on defense - junior goalie Jocelyn McCoy made eight saves to record her eighth shutout - paid dividends for the Cavaliers when Springer stayed with a ball down the left side before lofting a left-footed shot from 8 yards on a tough angle for her second goal of the season.
"They gave us a really big challenge, and I tried to just get in and take a shot. It barely got there, and I thought it was out, but it went in," Springer said.
The defending champion Cavaliers (10-0 overall, 4-0 league) had the best chance to score in the first half after McDonogh senior goalie Megan Lerner was issued a yellow card to set up a free kick just outside the penalty area with 12 minutes to play before the half.
Olivia Tomoff cleanly struck the free kick that sophomore backup goalie Morgan Ruhl tipped off the crossbar. Ruhl made a second save in front off the rebound before Lerner returned to the game.
McDonogh dominated midfield and controlled play for the majority of the second half but wasn't able to finish off any scoring chances before or after Springer's goal.
"I thought overall this was the type of performance we were looking for from our team. It's just a matter of spreading them out a little better and finishing opportunities," McDonogh first-year coach Harry Canellakis said.

The match, which was moved to Avery High School due to field conditions at Tate Field, saw Rich score the first goal in the 19th minute to give the Lady Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Emily Jones (Alliance 90-91) collected a loose ball and scored in the 60th minute to give Lees-McRae a 2-0 lead, and Rich added her final goal in the 64th minute to give the match the final score of 3-0.

Kempf Scores Twice in 2-1 Soccer Thriller Over Trinity (DC)
BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman forward Kelsey Kempf (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) (Alliance 90-91) wasted no time making an impression for College of Notre Dame soccer, scoring two goals in her collegiate debut to lead the Gators to a 2-1 victory over visiting Trinity (DC) Thursday afternoon at Alumnae Field. Notre Dame starts its 2009 campaign with a 1-0 record for the first time since the 2004 season. The Tigers fell to 1-1 with the loss.
The Gators controlled possession of the ball early on and had two shots at goal in the opening 12 minutes. In the 15th minute, Kempf took a free kick from just outside the top of the box and placed it skillfully into the top right corner of the net past Trinity goalie Cristina Martinez to give the Gators the early advantage.
Trinity then took over the possession battle and was able to break through in the 23rd minute. Tiger sophomore Macee Wray passed a free kick into the box where teammate Kiauna Hemsley was waiting. Hemsley slid towards the net and connected with the ball for the tying goal. Few serious scoring attempts were made during the rest of the period as the score remained 1-1 into the second half.
The Tigers were on the prowl early in the second frame, but two offside calls ruined prospects of any scoring opportunity for the visitors. Kempf was able to rocket more shots towards the Trinity net throughout the half from a distance, but none were close enough to produce a scare for the visitors.
In the 83rd minute, freshman Susan Schruefer (Baltimore/Perry Hall) fired a shot from just outside the top of the box. Martinez was able to get a hand on the shot for the save, but Kempf was in the right spot waiting and headed the ball into the net off a bounce for the game-winning score.
With seconds remaining on the clock, Hemsley used her speed to get down field and was all alone on the near side of the box. Hemsley fired a shot that hit the inside of the post and deflected away from the Gator goal as Notre Dame held on for the win.
Notre Dame netminder Mindy Daugherty (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) made two saves to earn the win in her debut. Martinez made seven stops in the losing effort.
The Gators had a 15-6 shots advantage over Tigers, but Trinity had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Notre Dame will kickoff a three-game road trip on Monday at local rival McDaniel. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Lady Bobcats Down Ferrum, 3-0 Article Date: 2008-09-02
FERRUM, Va. -- Senior captain Christine Calvert had a goal and an assist to lead the Lady Bobcats over the Ferrum College Lady Panthers 3-0 Tuesday night at Panther Field.
Freshman Jessica O'Leary (Millbury, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 28th minute to give the Lady Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The two teams carried the score into the locker rooms, but three minutes into the second half Calvert (Dallas, Texas) found the back of the net on a Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.) assist to make it 2-0.
In the 66th minute, freshman Brooke Santerre (Alliance 90-91's) (Port Republic, Md.) scored her first collegiate goal on a Calvert assist pushing the final margin to 3-0.
Sophomores Brittany Bolton (Roanoke, Va.) and Marissa Middleton (Olathe, Kan.) combined for the shutout in net for the Lady Bobcats.
"It was great to see Jessica and Brooke get their first collegiate goals," said head coach Renee Lopez. " They have been finishing in practice, so I am glad to see them finishing in a game."
"We played very well defensively," Lopez said. "I am pleased with our progress, but as I told the ladies, we need to keep fine-tuning things."
The Lady Bobcats will continue to fine-tune things Monday at 7:00 p.m against Brevard in their home opener at Tate Field .
LOTHIAN, MARYLAND – Southern Maryland FC’s U14 and U17 girls both picked up wins this past weekend as the U15’s won 4-2 over a strong SuperNova FC side and the U17’s tallied seven goals in a lopsided affair with Princeton.
Numerous storms across the east coast last weekend did not keep Maryland’s U14 girls from traveling to Carlisle, Pennsylvania to play Super Nova FC. But despite the team’s many early scoring opportunities, Maryland would not get their first goal until Desiree Bodziony beat the keeper nearing the end of the first half. On the goal, Bodziony collected a perfect through ball from teammate Taylor Morton, who earned an assist for her efforts.
The second half proved to be full of entertainment as the defensive strangle-hold wore off and the two clubs combined for five second-half goals.
After missing many chances in the first half, Katrina Savoy assisted on the second goal of the game, crossing to the feet of Lindsey Lane who would put the finishing touches on a goal that gave Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead.
It did not take long for Super Nova FC to start the comeback though, and they got their first goal of the game, a quarter of the way through the second frame to cut the score to 2-1.
Soon after Katrina Savoy and Alex Wetherholt both netted goals to squander any more come-from-behind ideas SuperNova may have had. With Southern Maryland holding a 4-1 lead, Super Nova FC scored late with a well placed free kick from just outside the box.
The win brings the U14’s record to 3-1. With nine points, Southern Maryland, playing out of Group C is in third place behind the Reading Rage and City Islanders Academy. The U14’s next match is on Saturday, June 21 against SuperNova. The match will be played at Southern Maryland’s home pitch – South River High School.
Southern Maryland’s U17 girls would have the same result, albeit on a larger scale, drowning Princeton Soccer with seven goals the following day. It took less than 30 seconds for Southern Maryland FC to get on the board with a goal coming from Michelle Grozinsky. She was assisted by Colleen Cain.
The goal set the pace of the match and Southern Maryland FC got three more first-half goals from Grozinsky, who would score one more plus add an assist, Stephanie Green and Kelsey Kempf. Becah Adams also tallied an assist. Christina Maldonado had 15 saves in net. The match ended 7-1 in favor of Southern Maryland who now hold three points and are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Mid Atlantic Division.
OTTAWA, ON – The Ottawa Fury have announced the signing of four new players to their 2008 W-League squad. University of Maryland graduates Ashly Kennedy and Sarah Sample will join current University of Mississippi players Jennifer Hance and Danielle Johnson on the Fury roster for this upcoming season.
"We are extremely fortunate to have added players of this quality to our roster,” said Fury Assistant Coach Dom Oliveri. “Ashly, Sarah, and Jennifer have US National Team experience and Danielle comes to us with a tremendous collegiate track record."
Kennedy, from Edgewater, Maryland has just completed a stellar varsity career at the University of Maryland. She is a two-time team captain who started all 74 matches of her Maryland career. During her time in College Park, the Terrapins posted 23 shutouts. Recognized as one of Maryland’s all-time best defenders, she was among the fastest defensive players in the ACC conference with a physical style of play that set her apart from the rest. Kennedy was a decorated youth level player and a member of the United States Youth National Team Pool.
Sample, from Annapolis Maryland, split her college career between George Washington University (2003/2004) and the University of Maryland (2005/2006). Sample was ever-present and dependable appearing in a total of 73 games (69 starts), scoring 12 goals and adding 10 assists. A versatile player, Sample can play midfield or up front. Before college she was a three year member of the Olympic Development Team as a US national pool player. Sample was no stranger to honors, being selected to the First team all-Atlantic 10 in 2004 and the 2003 Atlantic 10 all-rookie team.
Hance, from Sugar Land, Texas, has just completed her junior year at the University of Mississippi. The midfielder/forward was voted SEC Freshman of the Year by league coaches, second-team All-American by Soccer Buzz/Soccer America and was one of 15 finalists for Soccer Buzz National Freshman of the Year. She participated in a US U-20 National Team camp in 2006. Hance was consistently among the top points-getters on her college squad, racking up 17 goals and eight assists over the past three years.
Johnson, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a leading member of the University of Mississippi defense and midfield. In two seasons with Ole Miss, Johnson picked up Freshman All-America honors (2006) as well as All-SEC and All-Region honors in both 2006 and 2007. Johnson has anchored a miserly Rebel back line that allowed just 40 goals in 40 contests over 2006 and 2007. Johnson logged 1,828 minutes in 19 games for the Rebels last year and was voted team MVP by her peers.
The Fury has put together a tremendous W-League record over the past five seasons. They have qualified for the W-League Championship Finals in four of the last five years losing in the semi-finals in 2003 and 2004 and in the final to New Jersey and Vancouver in 2005 and 2006. In 2005 and 2007, the Fury was the W-League regular season champions. Last season, the club registered an unbeaten 11-0-1 record in regular season play, before losing to the eventual W-League champion Washington Freedom, 1-0 in the Eastern Conference final. The club has amassed a remarkable 58-5-3 regular season record over the past five seasons.
The Fury open their 2008 W-League campaign with a home game on Saturday, June 7 when they host the Western Massachusetts Pioneers at the University of Ottawa Athletic Complex, kickoff is at 7:00 PM. For season ticket information visit the Fury web site at www.ottawafury.com.
